Senior Legal Counsel

Job Description

Senior Legal Counsel - In House

📍 Cheltenham (2 days per week in office – Monday & Wednesday)

💷 £60,000 + excellent benefits

🏡 Hybrid working | 🤝 Supportive culture | 🚀 Strategic in-house exposure

The Opportunity ✨

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join a highly collaborative and commercially focused in-house legal team.

Reporting directly to the General Counsel & Company Secretary, this is a genuinely broad and strategic role offering exposure across commercial contracts, procurement, technology, data governance, strategic projects, and regulatory matters within a complex and fast-paced environment.

This is far more than a traditional contracts role. The successful candidate will work closely with senior stakeholders across the business, support major procurement and transformation projects, advise on legal and commercial risk, and act as a trusted advisor across multiple functions.

The organisation is looking for someone who thrives in a fluid in-house environment where priorities evolve quickly, commercial judgement matters, and no two days look the same.

Key Responsibilities 📌

  • Provide commercially focused and pragmatic legal advice across the organisation
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on a broad range of complex commercial and technology contracts
  • Support major procurement projects and strategic business initiatives
  • Represent legal on key cross-functional projects and project boards
  • Advise on GDPR, data protection, and wider data governance matters
  • Review and advise on data flows, data-sharing arrangements, and data-related contractual risks
  • Support procurement and supplier contract negotiations
  • Analyse legal and commercial risks and recommend proportionate mitigation strategies
  • Advise on marketing consents, customer data usage, and regulatory guidance
  • Provide legal support on complaints, fraud, verification, and operational matters
  • Advise on consumer law, competition considerations, and data ethics
  • Develop and maintain contract templates, legal guidance, and standards
  • Build strong relationships across the business as a dependable and commercially minded advisor
  • Support and collaborate with wider legal and governance colleagues where required

About You 👀

We’re looking for a qualified solicitor with strong commercial legal experience and the confidence to operate autonomously within a broad in-house role.

You will likely bring:

  • Significant post-qualified legal experience gained either in-house or within private practice
  • Strong commercial contracts expertise
  • Experience leading complex contract negotiations
  • Hands-on exposure to technology and SaaS agreements
  • Strong understanding of GDPR, data protection, and data governance principles
  • Experience advising within a fast-moving and commercially focused environment
  • Excellent drafting, analytical, and stakeholder management skills
  • The ability to balance legal risk with practical business outcomes
  • Confidence operating independently and influencing senior stakeholders

Experience working with cloud and technology agreements involving providers such as AWS, Microsoft, or Salesforce would be highly beneficial ☁️

The Ideal Candidate 🌟

You will be:

  • Pragmatic and commercially minded
  • Comfortable operating within ambiguity and managing competing priorities
  • Calm under pressure and highly dependable
  • Confident making judgement calls and proposing solutions
  • Collaborative and relationship-driven
  • Curious, proactive, and solutions-focused
  • Someone who enjoys being embedded in the business rather than operating in silos
  • A trusted and approachable advisor who communicates complex matters clearly

This role will particularly suit someone who values meaningful work, strong culture, and work-life balance alongside high-quality legal exposure and strategic involvement.

What’s on Offer? 🎉

  • Excellent work/life balance ⚖️
  • Flexible and trust-based working culture 🤝
  • Free gym access 💪
  • Subsidised canteen and barista coffee ☕
  • Modern refurbished offices 🏢
  • Team socials and company events 🎊
  • 5 volunteering days per year ❤️
  • Mental health and wellbeing initiatives 🧠
  • Free onsite parking 🚗

The wider legal team is known for being collaborative, supportive, and genuinely down-to-earth, with a strong emphasis on teamwork and shared success.

Additional Information 📋

  • Hybrid working: 2 days per week in the Cheltenham office (Monday & Wednesday – non-negotiable)
